For generations, working down the Shore has been part of life in New Jersey. Today, tourism supports more than half a million jobs statewide, with Monmouth and Ocean counties representing a significant share of the state's visitor economy. From lifeguards and badge checkers to bartenders, tradespeople and year-round careers, thousands of people make the Shore work while everyone else comes here to escape.
But which of those jobs is actually the best? We're talking with the people who do the work, the businesses that employ them and the people building careers here to find out what they earn, what they learn, what keeps them coming back and where the work can lead.
The Classic Jobs of the Jersey Shore
Meet the Contenders
Before looking beyond the obvious answers, we have to start with the classics. For generations, summer work along the New Jersey coast has meant beaches, boardwalks, busy restaurants and long days near the Atlantic. These are the jobs people picture when they think about earning a paycheck down the Shore.
But a great location doesn't automatically make a great job. We're looking at what each offers beyond the view — earning potential, experience, responsibility, atmosphere, skills and the kind of memories that keep people coming back season after season.
1. Lifeguard
It's difficult to argue with the view.
For generations, lifeguarding has been one of New Jersey’s quintessential summer jobs. Days are spent outdoors protecting swimmers, watching changing surf conditions and becoming part of a beach patrol tradition shared by coastal communities up and down the state.
The appeal goes beyond working beside the ocean. Guards develop water-rescue skills, physical discipline, teamwork and judgment under pressure. Training and responsibility make this one of the few seasonal positions where a day at the beach can also mean being trusted with someone’s life.

2. Beach Badge Checker
There may not be a more New Jersey summer job.
Beach badge checkers spend their days at entrances and along the sand, welcoming residents and vacationers while helping manage access to some of the state's busiest beaches. It's seasonal work with an office few people would complain about.
The position is also distinctly local. Beach badges are part of summer life in many New Jersey coastal towns, making this one of those occupations that immediately feels like working down the Shore. For students and first-time workers, it can also provide customer-service experience while spending the season beside the ocean.

3. Bartender & Server
There may not be a more Shore summer hustle.
When vacation season arrives, waterfront restaurants, beach bars and boardwalk dining spots can become some of the busiest workplaces along the coast. Longer shifts and packed weekends come with the territory, but tipped hospitality positions can offer strong earning potential during the summer rush.
The tradeoff is part of the story. Nights, weekends and holidays are often when restaurants need people most. For experienced bartenders and servers who thrive on energy, conversation and fast-paced service, however, a busy season can mean good money and a workplace minutes from the water.

4. Ice Cream Server
Everybody walking toward you is already in a pretty good mood.
Ice cream shops are woven into summers along the New Jersey coast. Families come off the beach, kids line up after dinner and young employees learn to handle a rush while serving one of the few things almost everyone is happy to buy.
For many teenagers, scooping cones or working a walk-up window is a first taste of seasonal employment. The job can build customer-service skills, teamwork and confidence while creating the kind of summer memories that make a first job surprisingly hard to forget.

5. Boardwalk Crew
You work inside everyone else’s vacation.
Ride operators, game attendants, food-service workers and other amusement employees help keep New Jersey's boardwalks moving when summer crowds arrive. The work can be hot, loud and fast, but few workplaces put you closer to the energy people travel to the coast to experience.
For younger workers especially, an amusement job can provide experience handling guests, working on a team and taking responsibility in a high-volume environment. Add rides, games, ocean air and thousands of visitors, and the workplace itself becomes part of the attraction.

It isn't seasonal, it doesn't happen behind a bar, on the boardwalk or from a lifeguard stand and most people would never think of it when asked to name a great job at the Jersey Shore.
But maybe they should.
6. Home Entertainment Technician
What If Your Workplace Looked Like This?
Imagine working in some of the most remarkable homes along the New Jersey coast, solving real problems with technology and craftsmanship, and leaving behind something a homeowner will use every day.
No two projects are exactly alike and neither are the places this career can take you.
